Nestled along the western slopes of the Sacramento Mountains, the small enclave known as Alamogordo (pop 32,000) is the gateway city to White Sands National Park and the Lincoln National Forest. A bounty of unique recreational opportunities is right at the doorstep of this deeply historical town. Located just a few miles from White Sands National Park, visitors to Alamogordo will find it a good base for exploring the vast gypsum dunes and the surrounding mountains, with its abundance of hiking trails, streams, lakes, and waterfalls.
Hotels, RV Parks, and vacation rentals in Alamogordo are unique, plentiful, and affordable.  The Alamogordo dining scene ranges from various established food trucks to the local famous winery-Lescombe’s casual elegance. Local coffee/breakfast eateries, Authentic Mexican Dishes, and World-Famous Green Chile Cheeseburgers are always popular hits with visitors.     
Alamogordo is an easy 1.5-hour drive to or from El Paso Airport on Highway 54. Las Cruces is slightly over an hour away from Alamogordo and to the southwest. Santa Fe and Albuquerque are both only 3.5 hours away. From Alamogordo, the road to Santa Fe offers breathtaking backcountry scenery, while the road to Albuquerque travels along Highway 25 for a more expedient route. Both routes to the north allow for easy access to the Three Rivers Petroglyphs Recreation Area (40 minutes from Alamogordo) and the Valley of Fires Recreation Area in Carrizozo (about an hour north of Alamogordo), a spectacular lava flow preserve-only 500 years young!
