Taos - Hiking
The Sangre de Cristo Mountains that surround the small mountain hamlet of Taos offer excellent hiking and backpacking opportunity in a variety of difficulties. The Carson National Forest protects huge swaths of land within this range and provides hundreds of miles of well maintained trail systems for exploration by foot. One of the more popular day hikes in the Taos area is Wheeler Peak Trail, which accesses the Wheeler Peak Wilderness and the summit of Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico at 13,161 feet. Other wilderness areas available for hiking & backpacking exploration in the Taos area include the Pecos Wilderness, the Latir Peak Wilderness and the Cruces Basin Wilderness.
