Description

Railroad Canyon campground in a great place to spend the night before beginning your trip into the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. Situated in the Black Range Mountains, the campground is a popular portal for backcountry trips. Amenities are few and the camping is lean, however, nature seekers will appreciate the myriad of trails accessible from this campground.

Small campground with some rough surfaces. Small, intermittent creek running through grounds.

Mimbres has a store and gas station and several restaurants. The nearest town for all other amenities is Silver City.

Area is easily overcrowded. Could be prone to flash floods during heavy seasonal rain storms.

Good biking can be found in the vicinity, although users should be aware of Wilderness boundary. Bicycles are not allowed in wilderness areas.

This is a good place to begin a horse ride, although there are no specific horse facilities.

Emory Pass Scenic Vista is located approximately 12 miles east of the campground and affords the visitor dramatic views of the middle Rio Grande Valley.

Railroad Canyon Campground is located along the Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway - a designated route that travels throughout southwestern New Mexico.

Wildlife abounds in this area of the Black Range. Visitors have the chance to see deer, elk, black bear, and many different species of birds.
