Description

Covering 36,500 acres of water surface and 24,500 acres of land, the Elephant Butte State Park is the most popular recreation spot in southern New Mexico for boating, fishing, camping and various winter sports. The reservoir's name comes from an eroded volcano in the middle of the water which is shaped like an elephant, though fossils of stegomastodon (ancient elephants) have been found in the area.
