Grants, New Mexico

Travel Information, Tourist Attractions, Activities,...

Grants, New Mexico is a diverse community of 10,000 people descending from many cultures and backgrounds. Our climate is mild year-round, typical of the high desert. We are located 1 hour west of Albuquerque on I-40.

Cibola County in the Land of Enchantment has much to offer. Great food served in a genuine atmosphere of beauty and enchantment. Catch the real spirit here in Grants, New Mexico. We still revere tradition here as well as innovations, and continue to celebrate the early blend of Native American and Spanish cultures that created our singular cuisine, different from anywhere else in the American Southwest or Mexico. Our official state question is after all, “RED or GREEN?”

Travel the Mother Road, Route 66 drive under the Route 66 Neon Arch and snap a picture. Enjoy the look of yesteryear old neon signs, vintage 50’s style hotels, you can even stay in the room, Elvis stayed!

Grants was a large uranium mining community from the 1950’s to the 1980’s and you can visit the only underground mining museum.

Grants enjoys four distinct but generally mild and sunny seasons. Summer highs in the upper 80s and low 90s are often broken with short afternoon showers. Early-morning winter temperatures in the 20s often climb to low 50s by mid-day.

El Morro Monument

HC 61 Box 43
Ramah, NM 87321
El Morro National Monument's archeological and historical treasures weave a colorful tapestry of the peopling of New Mexico.

Perhaps it was the very human notion of immortality that compelled people to leave their carvings on the rock at El Morro. Hundreds of petroglyphs bear witness to the lives of ancestral Puebloans. Archaic Spanish inscriptions proclaim, "Paso por aqui" (I passed by here). Still other inscriptions mark the journeys of early American pioneers, western emigrants, soldiers and railroad surveyors. These wielders of stone and steel, who reached out to passers-by of the future left a rare gift.

High atop the cuesta, the ancestral pueblo of Atsinna stands silent watch. Built around 1275 AD by the ancestors of the Zuni, the pueblo gave rise to a busy, thriving community. Today its remnant rooms and walls provide a glimpse into the past and a tie to the Zuni homeland.

El Malpais National Monument

1900 E. Santa Fe Ave.
Grants, NM 87020

The richly diverse volcanic landscape of El Malpais offers solitude, recreation, and discovery. Explore cinder cones, lava tube caves, sandstone bluffs, and hiking trails. Wildlife abounds in the open grasslands and forests. While some may see a desolate environment, people have been adapting to and living in this extraordinary terrain for generations. Come discover the land of fire and ice!

La Ventana Arch

Malpais is located south of Grants, NM, and 80 miles west of Albuquerque. Two state highways provide access to the NCA and Monument, and both are accessed via Interstate 40. Exit 89, east of Grants, will take you along NM Highway 117 which traverses the east side. Exit 81, west of Grants, will take you along NM 53 which travels down the northwestern edge. The Ranger Station is located 9 miles south of exit 89 on Highway 117.

There is a relatively easy walk to the base of the natural arch which is a highlight of the El Malpais NCA (National Conservation Area). Along the short 1/4 mile trail to the base, you will be surrounded by dramatic sandstone cliff formations,  pinon and juniper trees along with a variety of shrubs and grasses. At the end of the walk you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of La Ventana, one of New Mexico’s largest natural arches. The trail leading up to the base of the arch is primitive. Please stay on the designated trail in an effort to protect our fragile resources.

Ice Cave and Bandera: “The Land of Fire and Ice”

For a real experience in contrast, visit the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, "The Land of Fire and Ice," right on the Continental Divide.  Walk through the twisted old-growth Juniper, Fir, and Ponderosa Pine trees; over the ancient lava trails; down into the cave; and into a dormant volcano.  Inside the cave, the natural layers of ice glisten blue-green in the reflected rays of sunlight illuminating natural arctic algae.  Take a walk around the Bandera Volcano and view one of the best examples of volcanic eruption in the country. Browse the historic Ice Caves Trading Post featuring ancient artifacts, geologic souvenirs, refreshing snacks, and warm New Mexican hospitality

Mount Taylor

Each season on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District provides different opportunities for the forest visitor.  In late spring, summer and early fall, hikers and backpackers can enjoy the beautiful vistas along Gooseberry Spring Trail as they approach the summit of Mt. Taylor or Strawberry Canyon Trail on the way to McGaffey Lookout Tower in the Zuni Mountains. Fall offers warm, clear days and crisp, cool nights and brings with it abundant hunting opportunities in the Zuni Mountains and on Mt. Taylor.  Stands of aspen across the district provide beautiful gold and red foliage.  Winter sports include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.  The well-known Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon offers the adventuresome a challenging endurance race every February. In summer, skies often display single and double rainbows after seasonal monsoons.

With the federal Flight Service Station restored as the main museum exhibit area and interpretive space, additional signs and media are in place around the compound to tell the story of early air navigation systems. Inside the buildings and the airport office are displays on notable aviators and events in this area.

Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary

It takes an incredible amount of hard work to keep Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary operating smoothly. Like most non-profit organizations, we face countless challenges as we fulfill our Mission of Rescue, Sanctuary, and Education. Thanks to a small group of passionate staff and volunteers dedicated to providing the best life possible for our deserving rescues, Wild Spirit has been able to continue on with our mission. Our people are important, but so are our educational rescues. A select few of our social wolves and wolf-dogs work as ambassadors for their pack, and they assist our staff in educational efforts. These very uncommon rescues help us teach folks that wolves are not the big bad monsters of myth.  We often see guests fall head-over-heels in love with Wild Spirit after they meet one of our ambassadors. Upon meeting one, it’s easy to see that these magnificent beings deserve their rightful place in our ecosystem, far away from the fences and walls of a captive life.
