Silver City (pop 12,300), tucked into the southern foothills of the Pinos Altos Mountains at 6000 feet in elevation, is located at a climate transition zone, where the lower elevation intense deserts of southwestern New Mexico give way to the higher elevation, cool alpine climes of the Gila National Forest. Spreading out to the north of town are the Mogollan Mountains, once a hotbed for silver mining and the inspiration for the founding of Silver City in the 19th century.
Silver City still retains much of its former mining town feel with Victorian style facaded storefronts and quaint street systems. Visitors to Silver City will find it to be perfectly located for access to ample recreational adventures in the mountains and wilderness areas that are within a short drive of town.
Located along US route 180 northbound, Silver City has a reasonable amount accommodation options, with several motels and bed & breakfast options available. Dining establishments in Silver City are a bit limited, but with a small NM state college influence in town, the cuisine that available is filling, good and affordable.
