Silver City - Fishing
The Silver City area offers excellent angling opportunity to visitors
interested in both lake and river fishing. Located to the northwest
of Silver City, Roberts Lake, a manmade reservoir high in the Mogollan
Mountains, covers 72 acres and straddles the continental divide.
Roberts Lake is well known for its Rainbow Trout fishing during the
cooler months and warm water fishing for channel catfish and small
mouth bass during the summer months. Deeper in the mountains two more
manmade lakes, Quemado lake and Snow lake, which offer year round
rainbow trout fishing. The Mogollan Mountains and San Francisco
Mountains of the Gila National Forest support the Gila & San Francisco
River systems and smaller perennial creeks with good sport fishing for
Rainbow and Brown Trout, Large and Small Mouth Bass as well as Channel
and Flathead Catfish. Many native fish are also found in these streams
several of which, such as the Gila Trout, are considered threatened or
endangered. Visitors considering fishing in the Silver City area
should check with local outfitters or the New Mexico Department of
Game & Fish for more information on specific waterways, rules &
regulations and licensing. Fishing guides and outfitters that lead
